So it's been a little over 2 weeks since my grandfather, Lester D. Shubin (Sept. 27, 1925 - Nov. 20, 2009) died. It's been a very tough time since then. I still feel like he should be at home sitting in front of the tv (which is turned up way too loud). But he had a really nice burial, a nice ceremony and we've been shown so much love and support since he passed on.
Without friends & family, I really don't know where we'd be right now.
On a happier note, it's SNOWING! December 5th, 2009 and we must have about 2 inches by now! It's great! Maybe school will be cancelled or delayed on Monday.
And the closer for this post, my pen pal Mary is going to be coming to Cape May the same time as my family! July 10-24, 2010! Way to exciting!

NSPA/JEA Conference
This is gonna be a short post because I can barely keep my eyes open. This Friday and Saturday 11/13 and 14 I went to a National Scholastic Press Association Journalism conference. It was so amazing! I learned so many things - just sooo many. I got tons of tips and have plenty ideas to take back to my school newspaper! I met people from everywhere: Virginia, Kentucky, Texas, London, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, California! And plenty of other places too. Overall, it was the most amazing experience and to see that Journalism will never die it. While it may be on the internet instead of print media - there is always news!

This is Halloween
BOO! Did I scare you? Well it's only been 2 weeks since I've posted, so that's pretty darn good for me. not much going on. Can't wait for Halloween! I just pulled a leg muscle carrying some box in from outside. And I'm supposed to be taking a dog on a walk now. So that should be interesting and very painful! Yippee. Well, I'll write more on Sunday if I remember. NOthing much going on here. It's cold today :)

Cold weather
the weather is cold now. that's the best kind of weather there is. anyways. I haven't written for a while. I've been so unbelievably busy with school and newspaper. And farmville...ahha! I think I have a farmville problem. seriously, it's all I've been doing lately. Not good :)
So what else is on my mind? Hmm. PSATs today. I hope I did well. I would be so happy if I get a scholarship or any financial help towards college. I'd really like to go to a non-virginia school, but the parentals aren't crazy about that...
so this'll be a short post. more soon, and I really do mean soon!

VMAs & English poem
Seriously, what the hell is wrong with Kanye West! Beyonce has been famous for SO long, and Taylor Swift has only been famous for like 3 years!
You don't get up on the stage when someone is giving an acceptance speech for something they've won, TO SAY THAT SOMEONE ELSE DESERVED IT MORE. no you just don't.
It was such an innapropriate move and it REALLY irked me. I didn't even watch the VMAs but I knew what happened because everyone was posting it on FB and I youtubed it (it was up like 5 minutes after it happened). But seriously, so many people hate Kanye now.
So I wanted to put in a poem I wrote for English. My parents both really liked it, and I was extremely happy to see how it came out. So I thought I'd share it with the world :)
I am from the time of cell phones, from Purell and tide-to-go.
I am from the house with the cat on the mail box.
I am from the family who can’t seem to grow tomatoes, and the family that doesn’t have flowers, in fear that the cats will eat them.
I am from the family that draws a shank bone instead of having a real one for our Passover plate, and the family who wears glasses, from Regina and Rae and Chaim and Bela Loigman.
I am from the avid readers and New Jersey vacation goers.
I’m from the never forget who you are and don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.
I am from Judaism. I remember the six million who perished in the Holocaust, and pass that knowledge on.
I am from Alexandria, Virginia by way of Hungary, macaroni and cheese and latkes.
From the time my cousin Ryan bit the table at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, to getting make up on my cousin Monique’s floor, and the time when my brother accidentally flung a sausage at my dad.
I am from Cape May, where there are memories I will never forget. From meeting my pen pal Mary, to seeing dolphins out in the ocean, and the picture perfect moment of my brother Michael and I at dusk on the boardwalk.
I am a nineties baby growing up in the 21st century, where everyone knows who Harry Potter is, and can Google things they don’t know.

bust a move
allo to all of you out there. I'm so bad, I really fell off on the job when it comes to writing in the blog. But I guess the good thing is that I was too busy with friends! Because if I was just avoiding it because I'm lazy, well, that would be sad.
Last day of summer was spent with my best friend in the whole wide world, Allie. We hung out at her house, picked out all of our outfits for the first week of school. watched the incredibles, went to a shopping centre to get ice cream & fries.
the first day of school was really good. english class = ♥ ! geometry is okay, french 3 is pretty good, history sucks, journalism ROCKS and chem sucks. those classes such cause I really don't have any friends in those classes.
So looking foward to journalism and english tomorrow! and getting lockers! my stuff is so heavy. oh and my bus gets home like...2012944 minutes later than it used too.
Yesterday I bought the 17 again movie soundtrack. I'm in love with it. the best songs are on my own by vincent vincent and the villiams, can't say no by the helio sequence, naive by the kooks, bust a move by young mc.
well, I'll try to write again soon! now off to shower and WATCH GLEE! YES SO EXCITED!!

hellooo, you've reached rachel's blog. I'm not writing currently so leave a message after the beep.
*that beep is never coming :)*
I'm a bad blogger. I just haven't written in a while. I don't know why, I just never feel up to it. But anyway. Woke up this mroning at 8 am. Read for a while and went downstairs at 9:30. I watched the Wizards of Waverly place movie. Pretty good, actually. going to the mall later & then tye-dying shirts with Katay. Laters.

A kitten in the midst
so our family friend adopted a new kitten. but she was at the beach this week, so he is staying with my family until we get back! His current name is Diego - it's going to be changed. He's a little black kitten and he's the cutest little thing!
today I started getting prepared for his arrival. in my room,I put a towel down and a litter box on top of it. Then i got a place mat and put a bowl of water and two bowls of food out. his fosters brought him over with a little ball that is made out of a crinkly material. he loves it so much, it's so much fun to watch him play with it. he's very afraid though! but that is to be expected.
before he was brought up to my room, he was in the kitchen. we brought our cat Brooke in to see him. she definetly smelled him as soon as she walked into the room. Diego growled, hissed, his tail puffed and his ears went down. but then they relaxed.
now it's almost midnight and he is sleeping under my bed. I'm so happy to have him for a week! We haven't had kittens since our cats were kittens themselves!

Virginia: Is it always so boring here?
The answer is YES! Virginia is the most boring place on earth. I'm just glad that my grandparents moved into their condo last week. It's like 3 minutes away from my house. And I absolutely love it. My grandparents love it when I'm there. I helped them program phone numbers into their phones today.
I'm so excited because tomorrow I am going to see Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince! I really wanted to see it while we were in Cape May, but who wants to waste a day at the beach? Certainly not me. But regardless, I'm excited.
That's all for now. xoxo capemaychick!

Catching up
Sorry that there weren't any posts for the last few days. We were so busy!
Thursday July 23: Rainy day. Woke up around 11 am again. Had breakfast downstairs, forget what we did after that. Then Malia and I ate lunch. PACKED. Brought some stuff over to the next door neighbors. I went to see one of my other neighbors on the next street over. We correspond with each other throughout the year. She's a very nice lady, possibly around my mom's parent's age. She really reminds me of my Great Aunt who passed away a few years ago. Then my family and Malia went into the mall. Got some postcards, taffy, soap, earrings, and a necklace charm. We came home, went on a beach walk and got dinner. Played mini golf - I won again!!! And then had dessert, got another pair of earrings (yay!) and then a jewelry box, lollipop and sand dollar in a glass.
Friday July 24: Just can't believe that today is the last day in Cape May for a whole year. Woke up earlier today, around 10:40 am. Packed after breakfast. Helped mom pack the car (way more full than a car should be). Sat on the porch and finished the book I was reading [Local Girls by Jenny O'Connell]. Malia and I went to the beach and walked for about 45 minutes. We found some really great shells. Came home and showered. Went to Henry's for dinner. We were going to do some shopping but it was lightning off in the distance so we just went home. Had a fudge cone from Morrow's Nut House. Watched tv, read, more tv and then went to bed.
Saturday July 25: Woke up around 8:something. Didn't really eat breakfast. Made sure the car was packed and returned the key to the rent place. Walked to George's for breakfast. I got overheated and had to leave because I was really sick. You have to understand how ridiculous I act when I'm sick. I can't even help it, I just lose it. So the trip to the ferry was pretty miserable. Took some dramamine before we got on the boat. It was a very long ferry ride. Took a partial nap on the ferry. Felt somewhat better when we got off. Took a few naps in the car. Eat "breakfast" (for me, dinner for the rest of my fam + Malia) around 4:30 at Holly's. Was okay the car ride home. Unpacked the car completely. Said good bye to Malia (so sad, going to miss her a lot). Kind of chilled, played with the cats and sorted the mail. We unfortunately think that my Mom has appendicitis, a few calls to the doctor about that. Not sure where we are with that. Hoping for the best and that it's just a bug. It's 11:11 now, going to clean myself up and go to bed.
Not a good traveling day, very dissapointing last day in CM - but hey, what can you do ya know? I will still be using this blog, even though I'm not in CM anymore. Check it whenever you can! FYI - July 10-24, 2010 :) next years dates!

Average day
I'm having a blast with Malia. This morning we woke up around 11 am. We ate breakfast, and then made homemade toll house cookies again. Then we had a late lunch. Dropped cookies off at one of the neighbors, saw their cat and a feral cat that they're feeding. Then we went to the mall. I shopped with Malia. Then we went to the photography shop where my family met the owners this year and now we're friends because they also do cat rescue. We got to see these adorable month old kittens. We spent 2 hours there. We went home after that.
My cousin Jenn came over. We ate dinner and then headed to the boardwalk. We went to the arcade for probably an hour. Then we had black and white milkshakes at the Oasis and they were great. Then we walked home.
Now Malia and I are watching Malcolm in the Middle. Tomorrow will be another fun day with more shopping, the beach and mini golf!

Malia's here!
Hello out there. So today was probably one of my favorite days at the beach. This morning I woke up around 9:30 am. I didn't actually get out until like 11 am. So I eat breakfast and then took a shower. Then my mom and I left around 2 and went to an antique store. We bought a few antique pins, and I got a match box that was adorable (it was like a box with places to put matches) that I'm going to use as a jewelry box. Then we went to the Lobster House to get some food for dinner for today and tomorrow. Then we headed to the ferry. I made two new flat pennies (got a new book to hold them in). And then we saw the ferry pull in and we spotted Malia! Yay! We made a quick stop at the Acme to buy water bottles.
Then we came home and settled and had a snack. Then we started getting ready for the beach. The waves were massive! We spent about 2 hours at the beach. We came home, showered, ate dinner. Then Malia and I headed to the mall. We went into a whole bunch of shops. I bought 6 postcards and a peace sign scarf. Then we went to the boardwalk and had the most delicious funnel cake ever! Then we went into the arcade and played 3 games of skee ball. We also did one of those little photo booth pictures and we each have a strip of 4 photos. Came home, did ankle bracelets and now we are watching Malcolm in the Middle!

Ocean City
So today was a good day. Woke up, had breakfast, read a little. Went to some shops with my mom. Got a pucca shell charm for my charm bracelet. I had a pina coloda smoothie from Avalon Bagels. I came home and I was so excited because I had letters from Betty and Linds! Then I read and wrote back to them and chilled for a while. Then we went into Ocean city. We met my cousins for dinner. Went to the amusement park on the boardwalk and then to a few shops. Got a purple Ocean City, New Jersey sweatshirt and a Cape May charm from a jewelry store. It's about 12:30 am and I'm exhausted. Tomorrow Malia is coming!

Brealey's BDay party

This is going to be a short entry because I'm tired. Today we went to a birthday party for a dog. It was more fun that it sounds! The dog went swimming in the pool! And the party favors were awesome: a tee shirt that says Brealey's Birthday Bash (in the picture) - it says Rachel on the back, an embroidered tote bag that says Rachel also! And a little thing with 2 buttons/iron on thing, and an electronic suduku. It was a really nice gift.
We also went to a few antique stores on the way there. I got a bead necklace and 4 old postcards (which is my new collection). I went on a walk on the beach later and found 7 pieces of beach glass! 5 green and 2 brown.

Homemade cookies
Today we decided to make homemade toll house cookies. It's been my tradition (and my pen pal) to bake cookies, eat some and also bring some to the neighbors & socialize.
We always did the slice 'n bake toll house cookies. This year they were recalled for e. coli so we wanted to steer away from those.
making homemade cookies is actually easier than it sounds. It took around 90 minutes -- not enough oven space, and it's a really crappy oven.
But nonetheless we made the cookies and they were pretty yummy. We brought them to 3 neighbors (two more tomorrow) and spent a great deal of time with each. Causing us to not get to dinner until 10.
Another note: the owners of the house where Callie & Joey (other cat whose name I couldn't remember) were staying, left for home. The new people were there and seemed somewhat fond of the cats. We found out that they, like us are from NoVa too! It' s a very small world, after all :)

Birds
Good morning! It's 7:44 am right now, thanks to some REALLY loud birds. I woke up and am having trouble falling back asleep. So I was thinking back to when i was younger and in CM. I would always be up before my parents. They usually didn't wake up for at least an hour or so after I was up. I would always sit on the front porch swing and read. Now that I'm older & a teenager - I usually never get enough sleep, except in the summer. It is an odd day if I get up befor emy parents who usually wake up around 9 am. I Like getting up between 10-10:30 am.

Here Kitty, kitty

The Time: 11:34 am
The Setting: My room in CM
The problem: I'm waking up too late
The cause: Parents were out "adopting" a cat.
How it began: Today was one of the more interesting days in CM. I woke up and it was 11:34 am. I absolutely hate waking up after 11. So I was not thrilled that I had just woken up. I headed downstairs and my brother told me that my parents were on Page Street adopting a cat.
Here's what you don't know: My family is involved with cat rescue, thus our five cats. But nonetheless, CM is known for it's prime bird watching spots. The feral (wild) cats that roam around the town "kill" the birds. Here's what I know: They don't. But long story short, there is a "law" that cats have to be kept inside. I don't see any police officers enforcing that rule!
What I'm trying to get to: There was this beautiful calico cat (bottom) on Page Street. My family was charmed by her, and so was another family. They were planning on taking her and this one other cat (forget his name) home to PA. While Cape May is a small town, we ran into one of our cat friends and he told us that she wasn't his cat, and she and her friend actually have owners.
The point: So knowing that these two cats have owners, the people who were planning on taking her might still ask the owners if they can take them. Who knows what'll happen. CM is special.
Tidbit of info: Cape May has lots of feral cats. We see them all the time. Like the one in the picture (top). We saw h[im][er] under Henry's restaurant. We met another lady here who helps take care of feral cats (one family in particular who lives on Perry street).
Bottom line: Cape May is a very cat friendly place. This is the second summer in a row where we have almost come home with a cat >^^<
Until later, xo capemaychick

A Place On Earth
I like weird things. Soap, is one of them. Infact, I think I could COLLECT it! I know, that would be pretty weird. But still, soap smells good and it makes you clean :) two of my favorite things. Soap comes in different scents, shapes, sizes, etc. I like soaps in the shape of shells and flowers and stuff.
There is a soap shop in Cape May called a place on earth (www.aplaceonearth.com). They hand make their soaps and they smell so good! My favorite is Cool Cape May (of course). Today I got body scrub there in a rasberry scent and it was also ahh-mazing.
Anyway, not much else happened tonight. Mini golf (the other one in CM -- much harder -- didn't go so well). Let's just say, I probably shouldn't play on that course any more. The high light of my night was tied between the custard from Rita's and seeing a police officer put a ticket in someone's car :) I'm mean. COMMENT & follow me!

Shopped til I dropped
So nothing much went on this morning. Today was a scorcher. My mom and I went into the town and to the pedestrian mall. We got tons of stuff, it was fun :) My fave thing is this body scrub from 'A Place on Earth'. It smells like fresh rasberries and it's so delicious. I can't wait to use it. Not sure what the plans for tonight are.
Miss y'all! Check out my beach pic! So pretty!

Skee ball
So later today, we went to the beach. Saw dolphins as soon as we got on! I remember one time I was really sad, because it was the last day at the beach before we left, and I turned around to take one last glance - and that's when I saw a dolphin jump ALL the way out of the water!
The water was cold at first, but Shaggy and I decided to go in. It took some getting used to, but we did it! The water was warm after you got used to it. Though the water was way to rough to swim in. So we didn't go in very far, we just "waded", if you will.
I left my mom and Shaggy on the beach to go get a funnel cake. It was so expensive, $4! And it wasn't very good like last year. I think I'll get them at the Oasis instead of this place.
I'm really annoyed -- After my shower (outdoors, I LOVE outdoor beach showers!), I blow-dryed my hair. That's a pretty rare thing for me to do at the beach because it's usually too humid and my hair curls. But it was cool and dark outside, so I did it anyway and it was all nice and straight. Then we went to the boardwalk to play in the arcade. It was SO windy on the beach and my hair got all toussled and curly! FROM THE WIND! It wasn't even that humid!
Anyways...I am a master at skee-ball. My family and cousins always play at the beach. I know the highest I've probably ever rolled is 290, maybe 320? But the highest I got tonight was like 220. I wish skee-ball was a sport you could play on a league. Maybe I should join a bowling league. I already have my own ball :) Yes, I got it for my Bat Mitzvah which I had at the bowling alley. That reminds me, I should go bowling. There aren't any alleys in CM to do that, OMG WHERE DO THEY GO BOWLING? I think I need to investigate that.
Tomorrow it's supposed to rain :( bleh. Rain on vacation sucks. Leave comments :)
